Back in the Saddle
Looks like it’s been a year and a half since I last posted. I went off-line when I tried, twice, to create an SSL using Creatbot. Wasn’t totally necessary except Google won’t give websites any ranking without a SSL certificate. An SSL, for anyone not knowing, is a third party encryption certificate that basically says “this site is safe to use”. It a requirement for websites passing sensitive information over the internet, such as credit card information. But now it seems that all websites need it, even if you just have a blog.
My website was being self-hosting on a Raspberry Pi. I don’t know why that would matter, or if I was doing something wrong, but my site was just not running after the SSL was installed on the Pi. So, to get things back up I bought a $5/month server from Linode and installed an Ubuntu operating system with the Appache web server. When it came time to install the SSL certificate from Certbot, it did so without a hitch. So know we’re back up.
“Why did it take so long” you might ask? “I suppose I was just too busy with other things” I might answer.
A couple of weeks ago my Pirack is went down, which runs all my Raspberry Pi servers including the aforementioned website. I think the power supply went south, but I really won’t know until I investiage further. This power supply is a 12V 100W from Meanwell and it’s not all that cheap, so I hope it’s not that. I’ll put a meter on it and see.
I’ll report on that later.
Later: The power supply is fine
